Beyond Boundaries: Contest THEME!Hi everyone,
I hope your team collaborations are going splendidly! You are about halfway through the competition! Congratulations on making it this far.
Today marks the start of Week 5, and it's time to reveal the theme for your contest photomanipulation entry!
The theme is . . .
One Moment in Time
I left this theme vague intentionally.
Basically, your deviation can be a snapshot of an historical time period, OR it can represent a moment in someone's own life (now) that really stands out. It can be a good memory or a bad memory, nice or scary. It can be anything you want as long as TIME is represented somehow (figuratively or literally).
Also, in your artist's comments when you submit, please write one sentence describing the moment in time that inspired you to create this deviation.
As a reminder:
You must already be a member of this competition to join this part of the contest.
Your coach and your team can
Dead Horse is Dead.Hi all,
Thanks for your patience with the stock nonsense these days. I received this e-mail as part of a mass BCC today:
Dear [name of original writer],
Thank you very much for your email.
I have multiple requests for the same information from many devianart users, this response is bcc'ed to all parties seeking clarification.
I am aware of all the discussions regarding the use of sxc.hu images by devianart users. It appears a lot of the users have misinterpreted the terms of the license agreement granted by sxc.hu and I will be happy to clarify and hopefully answer all of the questions.
1. The rights granted by sxc.hu license are very limited and specific. You may not use sxc.hu images in photo-manipulations or digital collages. Furthermore, you cannot create any derivate works with the use of
Welcome to Arts and HealthWelcome to ~Arts-and-Health. We are glad you are here!
We are not a typical "art collection" group!
Please take a moment to read a little bit about us and our mission.
Arts & Health is about art. And health.
We are a new Community Project but not an "official" dA group.
We are grateful for the generous backing of Community Relations.
We are concerned not only with how art is used to show health and illness, but also with how art can be used as a vehicle for storytelling. We want to show what it's like to live with an illness (regardless of how major or minor) as a means to raise awareness not only of the condition, but also of the human spirit and endurance. At our core, human beings are brave and resilient creatures, even in the face of illness, and we want to depict this triumph while raising awareness of illnesses.
We are still ironing out the format of the group.
We plan to put together a bimonthly (perhaps moving to monthly) "e-zi
Arts and Health: A new Community ProjectWhat is Arts & Health?
Arts and Health is a new community project here on dA: ~Arts-and-Health that was started by ^Aeirmid with the kind support of $Moonbeam13, Director of Community Relations, and $namenotrequired, ^Astralseed, and ^Kaz-D. It is NOT an official dA group.
Its overall purposes are to encourage and help empower deviants to use art as a creative outlet for telling the story of what it is like to live with a health condition and to raise awareness of illness and resilience through storytelling. The group will share stories of trials and triumphs, hope in the face of the unthinkable, and resilience that comprises each and every human spirit. Art is a transformational medium, and through it we can tell our stories in a language that our words alone can never capture.
What is the format?
We are letting our members decide on the final format of the group. We anticipate that
Photomanip: Interview with Ellyevans679Hello, deviantART!
It gives me great pleasure to present another photomanipulation-related interview developed and conducted by one of our own community members (not by me!). It is wonderful when members get involved with the community and share a bit of themselves with the rest of us; we can all learn a lot from one another, which is very important as we grow as artists (regardless of our level of experience).
Without further ado, here is the interview of *Ellyevans679, written and conducted by ~XilaPhoenixArt.
Elle, tell us a bit about yourself, please.
I’m a self-confessed workaholic. I have always held jobs in publishing and graphic design but in 2005 went back to uni and completed by Bachelor of Multimedia Arts and wasn’t working very much when I was a student. When I
It's Your Turn to Ask an Expert!Project Educate is just over a week away!
And one of the activities we have is called "Ask Me Anything!"
Do you have a burning question about photomanipulation that has been plaguing you? Is there some technique, some tip, you would like to know? Have you always wondered, "Hey, how did they do that?"
THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO FIND OUT!
You. Any member of the deviantART community can participate in this activity.
You can ask any photomanipulation question to our team of experts. It really can be anything! You will note your question to us, and it will be randomly assigned. You will not be able to choose who you want to answer your question. Please understand that this policy is for the sake of preserving our sanity and your satisfaction by making things run more smoothly and efficiently.
Your question MUST:
Have to do with photomanipulation.
Be only ONE question.
Be sincere. Remember that people are taking time ou

Wanted: Your Photomanip Collabs!Hi all,
Thanks to a brilliant idea from =Sandra-Cristhina, I am going to put together a showcase of the most fabulous photomanip collaborations from 2012. If you have a pair of collaborations that you want me to consider, please drop links (not thumbs; they won't show up) to at least one of the pieces on this journal.
I've thought about whether I should feature all of them, or just choose a few. I'm still working on this issue, but my current thought is to highlight the most outstanding collaborations. Your thoughts on this matter are welcome, as I really do not want to leave anyone out or be unfair; at the same time, though, there is only so much space.
This is a way for artists who have done collaborations to get a bit more attention. I generally don't DD them because, after all, how do you give one artist a DD when two have worked so hard on something?
So, show me those links! I have a few in mind myself.
To get us started, here are the ones :devsandra-cristhina
Arts and Health 02: Depression and DiabetesSo, when I first heard that diabetes and depression were related, my first reaction was like, "wha--???"
But, yes! It's true!
People living with diabetes are more likely to get depressed than people without diabetes.
There are a lot of reasons. For one thing, the disease itself is difficult to deal with, and, for some people, the fact that they have something that they will have to take care of for the rest of their lives can be overwhelming.
But, it goes beyond that. There are many biological pathways that connect diabetes and depression. We'll talk about some of them in a moment.
When I tell people that people who have diabetes are more likely to develop depression than people without diabetes, they may look at me funny, but they usually accept it. The fact that this pathway works in both directions is what baffles people.
That's right. Not only does having diabetes increase your risk for depression, but also having depression increases your risk for developing diabetes.
The 365 Photography Challenge - How to Stick at itBefore I start with this article, a little disclaimer. I just finished the 365 photography challenge - known as a 'photo a day' but I blogged and took more than one photo on most days, so it was that little bit more challenging. So I'm feeling pretty smug right now, that I achieved it. But I am by no means toting myself as an expert. This is just my humble advice on how to keep going when it does nothing but rain, or when you feel like giving up.
Before 2012, some weeks would pass when I wouldn't even pick up the camera, let alone think about shots, or how to compose one. Photography still excited me, but I was lacking inspiration. So on the 2nd of January last year I decided to throw everything up in the air, and let go. That is to say, I stopped being precious about the camera (because you can't when you have to take a photo a day) and I forced myself to take rubbish shots, as well as half decent ones.
Start as you mean to go. Don't over-set yoursel
PE: deviantART SuggestionsWhat are deviantART Suggestions?
Visual suggestions are mock-ups of suggestions to propose a new feature or improve an existing feature on deviantART. These are great because it helps users visualize what your suggestion would look like if it were an actual feature.

Gallery Makeover Project: Photography$Moonbeam13 recently posted a journal about the Gallery Makeover Project. The project talks about the changes that have already occurred within the Galleries here on deviantART. When the new 'submit' became live, it was important that all the gallery descriptions were updated and the thumbnail examples accurate. Now it's time to look at the galleries themselves!
The CV team is working alongside $Moonbeam13 to act as a port of communication for you to share what you think needs to be changed within the galleries. So, because of this, ^3wyl and I are asking you what you'd like to see changed within the Photography Galleries or whether indeed, everything should just stay the same!
Sometimes, sub-categories can be very confusing and there are a fair few galleries within Photography that have an extensive amount of sub-cats. Are there too many? Do you think there needs to be an

Gallery Makeover: Icons and Handhelds We're slowly nearing the end of this first phase of the Gallery Restructure Project which means if you would still like to give us any kind of feedback related to the Icons & Handhelds gallery structure, now's the time to do so!
Please also scroll down and see which points have been brought up by the community and feel free to tell us what you think about them.
As recently announced by $Moonbeam13 in this article deviantART will soon be undergoing a rather extensive makeover of the gallery system in order to streamline categories and simplify submissions. That will amongst others include the removal of dead categories, merging where it makes sense or simply a complete restructuring of a whole root category if necessary.
Community input is highly important for this so with this journal you have the opportunity to specifically give feedback concerning the Icons

Fix that Miscat! ~Fashion Photography V.CommercialThere often seems to be some confusion over whether your Fashion Photography belongs in Photography -> People & Portraits -> Fashion Portraits or Photography -> Commercial Photography -> Fashion. Unlike other galleries that we are slowly defining and educating on through this series of articles, the difference between these two is quite clear cut and there are certain aspects of your Photography that will dictate where it should go. Have a read through the article and hopefully that will clear up some things if you were previously confused!

Famous Photographs: The Afghan GirlIf you run a google search on what are the top famous Photographs of all time, The Afghan Girl is sure to appear. She is truly a face from History and one that many across the globe have tried to capture within others time and time again. But what exactly has made this image and its photographer so captivating?
Source: Daily Mail/National Geographic/Steve McCurry
Eyes, they say, are the window to the soul. And capturing such a piercing and expressive look in a photograph is a highly sought after skill. The Afghan Girl exhibits suspense, suspicion and a sense of distrust at the person behind the lens, she gives off an air of maturity, a foreboding feeling - a vulnerability behind years of strength. That, is what makes her so captivating.
Sharbat Gula is her name, although few even know this rather important detail. Sh

Hi Amber! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I'm an enthusiastic, multitasking, motivational, always try to inspire kind of person! I was born and raised in Southern California, I'm an identical twin, and I've been an artist all my life (or at least since I could remember).
How did you discover deviantART?

August Arts and Health Challenge: JoyHi everyone,
We are opening a new month on a positive note; the challenge theme for August will be Joy. Living with a health condition (or caring for others who do) does not have to be all doom-and-gloom! What are the things that bring you joy, even amid the darkness?
Joy is essential to life. Researchers have shown that, generally speaking, people who have more joy in their lives tend also to be healthier. Sometimes in life, it is too easy to forget to take a moment and drink in something that makes us joyful. It is medicine in and of itself.
Your entries to this challenge should focus on the theme, "JOY."
Here are the rules:
You can enter as many times as you want, but you must be a member of ~Arts-and-Health to participate.
The admins and/or guests will choose one winner to receive a three-month subscription-- something large enough to be rewarding but not so large that it is coercive.
We will judge based on, "Which piece moved us the most?"
Keep in Touch!
