Whose life is it, anyway? All I do these days is write. Manuscripts, dissertation, course schedules and syllabi . . . it never ends. Tonight I got tired of writing, so I decided to organize something. The obvious choice for me was my CD (I just aged myself, I know) and blu-ray disk collections.
Going back through the CDs brought back a lot of memories for me; some of them were from high school, which was more years ago than I care to admit. Each piece of music had a story and an attached memory, whether it was my beloved Def Leppard or some silly pop song. But, as I went through them and discarded what I no longer needed or desired, it suddenly occurred to me:
I'm not this person anymore.
At the core of my collection lay those things I treasure to this day. Evanescence. Def Leppard. Led Zeppelin. Old-school Aerosmith. Even the requisite Beethoven, Bach, Haendel, and Tchaikovsky. Things that make me cry. Things that make me want to sing along. Anthems that remind me
Notable NewcomersHello, all!
I wanted to feature some new photomanipulators. Each of these talented artists has been on DA for less than a year, yet they have taken concepts to a whole new level. Please welcome them and offer your support!
Underwater scenes have been done before, but I really like the way this artist added interesting elements in the background and created a wistful, reflective feeling. Also, his lighting is really nice.
This artist has a wonderful mastery of colors and light. The idea of staring down over a city is not new, but the interesting, creative way she presents the concept is very original.
This quite emotional conceptual piece stands out from the crowd because of the artist's powerful interpretation of the stock model. The artist also uses color and light effectively.
The artist has a super cool concept here, and he blends a lot of stock images together
Manip AcademyIntroducing a new project!
Manip Academy (thanks, cristii, for inspiration for the name) is a new photomanipulation project inspired by projecteducate. We all love to learn, and we learn best from one another. Here's our chance to share what we know.
Manip Academy is an education initiative designed to spread the knowledge and the love. It is a collaboration between CRPhotomanipulation and we-HEART-photomanip. We will share tips and tricks for photomanipulation success. It is difficult to write tutorials, but anyone can write a simple tip or describe how they achieved a specific effect.
This project will feature two weekly articles written by the community every week, on Mondays and Thursdays. This will be an ongoing project within our community, and we hope that many people will take advantage of the chance to sign up to submit one blog or even just a few sentences to help the community.

Getting 'over it'You're special and unique, just like everybody else.
The magnanimous Dr. Maya Angelou once said, "We are more alike, my friends, than we are different." This statement is more true than it may appear on the surface. As humans, we all face the same fears (not being adequate or liked) and the same struggles (with anxiety, depression, and others of life's challenges), even though they may seem different at the time. Sometimes the magnitude is different, perhaps, but we all want to belong and be accepted.
It's so easy to get caught in the trap of thinking, "No one understands me. I'm all alone." That may or may not be the case, but either way, whether it is reality or perception (and really, reality is perception), we cannot let it defeat us. Take a look around DeviantArt, and even the mental-health community. We all have pain, and we all suffer something or other in our lives. Again, it may be a difference in magnitude, but it is part of being human.

Art for a Cause- Please read!Hi everyone,
Please do me a huge favor and check out this journal:
The journal is about the creation of an art book for a deviant who is living with terminal lung cancer. Please, even if you cannot help, take a moment to pass the information along.
Thank you for your time and attention to this important cause.

10 Ways to Improve the Quality of our PhotomanipsOn the "decline" of quality in the photomanipulation gallery
I've seen a lot of polls, journals, etc. recently about the quality of the photomanipulation gallery and fears that it has declined. I have intentionally not commented, but I will address the issue here. I think our beloved community is going through a "learning phase" where we are rediscovering ourselves and our art. We have a lot-- a LOT-- of new people, and I want to wish them a warm welcome because they are critical to our vitality as a community..
In turn, a lot of our older, more experienced artists have moved on, frequently owing to time constraints due to having more commissions and freelance work.
So, saying our quality has declined is really not fair. Rather, we are in a cycle of change that happens every couple of years within our community.
It is perhaps true that we have reached a collective slump in creativity. Like inspires like, and I see the same thing over and
Tips For Commission ArtistsHello! I thought of making this small guide, based from my personal experience, to give tips to artists, mostly beginners, to be more successful at selling commissions, since seeing from my previous journal many had difficulty with it. So here are some tips to help boosting your sales.
Have your commission info somewhere visible
Possibly, people won't even know you are taking commissions or if they are open if you don't put your commission info somewhere they can see. You can do this in a journal, that I mostly recommend, since it will be showing into your watcher's inboxes and most of your watchers probably rarely visit your profile page. You could still also use the commission widget, or donation poll to write your info. You can also link to your commission info in your signature or the artist's comment of new drawings you upload.
Keep it simple
Don't add too many unnecessary rules or in

White Knights and Why They're HarmfulThis is quite a huge/concerning topic, and I know that not all deviants share the same point of view, and I respect that. I'm sure that there are many other journals touching upon this subject, but because I personally have had very bad experiences with it, I want to inform my watchers about it myself! Hope it helps some.
So, for the past year or so I've noticed that some people saying that they specifically dislike a lot of "popular" dA artists due to the overprotective behavior of their watchers.
I personally find it very sad that people are turned off by my artwork simply because they associate my username with "[my] white knights".
There's no way I can possibly control what my fanbase does or says, and this can lead to some very awkward situations and conflicts on my end.
Don't get me wrong...I love each and every one of my watchers, in fact without you guys my artistic life would be incredibly more lackluster. I'm sure ma

5 ways to get into the creative zoneDear, deviantart fellow artists
Sometimes we tend to feel unmotivated and uninspired to do anything... but there are also those blissful moments of creativity, when inspiration strikes and time goes by unnoticed. Not getting distracted, going with the flow, so merged in the process, that there is no need to do anything else until the work gets done. But how to get in that mood more often..? Here are some ways/tips that helped me over the time.
1. Prepare your work space
Make the place you work as comfortable and useful as possible. Clean the desk from all the clutter, gather your tools in a most accessible way, organize in order to avoid mess. Set the according light, have some inspiring quotes, goals written around.
2. Avoid distractions
Turn off the internet. Or close all the tabs, you don’t need. Especially, social media sites. Don’t check the news/e-mail/mobile phone all the time. Get in the place where

Do's and don'ts for flawless interactionNot much to say about this.
Just some basic tips and tricks for flawless interaction on DeviantArt
Watch people when you honestly find them interesting.
Watch your friends, even if they don't have amazing art. It helps you stay updated with their progress.
Watch groups. They'll offer you a fine selection of art you're interested in, and will help you discover new (interesting) artists.
Check the faves of people you watch. As you like their work, you might have similar tastes in art. Checking their faves might help you find cool art.
Recommend art from people that you watch for a Daily Deviation (if good art, of course).
Uncheck all boxes when watching. There's nothing more disappointing than an empty watch.

So, there are two more things I want to say! First of all a little reminder that, if you share this journal, please link back to it here so I can assign a number to you for option 2. I saw some of them in my mention and reminded a few people there, but in case you don't use a thumb, my :icon: or the :dev:, I can't see if you shared it and can't remind you to do so. It would be a pity if you did it and don't have a chance because you forgot to link back - thus, a little reminder to do it if you haven't done it yet! ^^
On another note, please, everyone give a huge huge hug and thanks to BAMART19! He is terribly kind and donated a lot of points for this giveaway, so you should definitely check him out! He has a 60k kiriban as well, if you're interested So go and take a look at this stuff! August Arts and Health Challenge: JoyHi everyone,
We are opening a new month on a positive note; the challenge theme for August will be Joy. Living with a health condition (or caring for others who do) does not have to be all doom-and-gloom! What are the things that bring you joy, even amid the darkness?
Joy is essential to life. Researchers have shown that, generally speaking, people who have more joy in their lives tend also to be healthier. Sometimes in life, it is too easy to forget to take a moment and drink in something that makes us joyful. It is medicine in and of itself.
Your entries to this challenge should focus on the theme, "JOY."
Here are the rules:
You can enter as many times as you want, but you must be a member of Arts-and-Health to participate.
The admins and/or guests will choose one winner to receive a three-month subscription-- something large enough to be rewarding but not so large that it is coercive.
We will judge based on, "Which piece moved us the most?"
The Coffee GodThe Coffee God behind the counter shuffles foot to foot, a dance of steam and espresso. Black painted fingernails, inch gauged ears and a gray striped sweatshirt, hood crooked on his back. There's a cigarette tucked behind one ear; it bobs and twitches with each step.
“Non-fat caramel latte,” he calls, just as he always does, part of a spell, part of a mantra, toneless (just a tuck at the end). I reach. He looks up.
The espresso maker hisses.
There's something like a grin, something like a spark, something like a shared secret linked eye to eye. When he passes over the drink (rough cardboard sleeve hot to the touch), he lingers. Our fingers brush, a shiver, a jolt, a ten-watt shock.
The Coffee God tilts his chin, shouts, “Hey, mind if I take my break now?”
and ducks around the counter without waiting for a reply.
He slips his cigarette between his lips without taking his eyes from mine. I follow him out the door.
Keep in Touch!
