Some action steps from today's Photomanip chatHi everyone,
Here are some action steps based on today's Photomanipulation Community meeting. We are looking for people to head these things up. If you see an activity or project below that you would like to take the lead on, please let me know. Please don't assume others will do it; if we want to get things done we often have to step up ourselves and get our hands dirty. If no one's name is next to the item, it's all yours!
Here are the activities:
Coaching competition - A coaching/mentoring contest in small groups.
Stock challenges with stock that is being underused (Elandria) - Regular challenge series in partnership with the stock community to encourage manipulators to use stock that is rarely used to create something different.
DON'T COPY ME challenge - Regular challenge series in which you are given a list of really awesome photomanips. You have to choose one and use most of the same stock but
Photomanip Chat, anyone?I'm back!
Thanks for your well wishes; I had to bury two people I loved within 4 days. I have a lot of DD suggestions to get through, and I can't promise I will reply to all of them because there are about 100, and I'm behind on work, too.
Results of our research
We as a community identified the following issues in the following order as being most important to us:
1. "Trash" in the gallery (NOTE: This means inflations, screencaps, etc., NOT beginner manipulations!!)
4. Inability to give/receive proper feedback
We also identified that the biggest strength our community has is its people. We have a high level of talent, a sense of collegiality, and great sources of inspiration.
So, how can we use our strengths to address our weaknesses? Let's talk about it.
Join me now in :#crphotomanipulation: (just click that link) to discuss some of these issues a
Short absenceHi all,
I hadn't planned to write a journal about all this because I don't like to get attention based on external circumstances. However, I have an inbox full of DD suggestions and I want to explain why they are unopened and/or unanswered. I have a family emergency and am out of town for the time being. I will be back shortly, and I will get to everything in a couple of days.
I appreciate your continued patience!

Accepting Photomanip AND Digital Art suggestionsHi all,
I just wanted to confirm that I am now (also) a Digital Art CV and am helping diphylla out with the Digital Art (mixed media and drawings and paintings) gallery in addition to holding down the fort in Photomanipulation. So, feel free to send me those suggestions.
i am not abandoning photomanipulation, and you still have my full attention and loyalty. I have some great ideas about how to address the challenges we identified in my recent polls, and I hope we can work together to discuss all our ideas and figure out how to make them happen. Interested in helping? Talk to me about being an admin at CRPhotomanipulation.
This is an exciting opportunity for the photomanipulation community and the digital art community to become more familiar with each other. The group Digitalists is dedicated to all digital art, including photomanipulation. Feel free to join us!

Aeirmid's DD Guidelines v.3 - Sept 2014Overview
Daily Deviations (DDs) are a way for the Community Volunteer team and deviantART Staff members to share art that is outstanding and stands apart from the gallery. We aim to showcase stellar art, and an artist can receive one DD every six months. DDs are not prizes to be won or awards to be given; they are simply daily features. For more information about DDs, be sure to review :faq61:
I can accept DD suggestions for the following galleries and only the following galleries:
Digital Art > PhotomanipulationDigital Art > Mixed MediaDigital Art > Drawings and Paintings

Here are my specific guidelines for photomanipulations and mixed media work:

Winners: A Candle in the DarkGreetings!
So, we are long overdue to announce the winners for the "A Candle in the Dark" contest at mental-health. That's my fault; I hope you will forgive me (Aeirmid).
The point of the Candle in the Dark contest was to have people reflect on the things (coping mechanisms, people, etc.) that helped them get through their darkest times and come out stronger for the journey. It's about overcoming obstacles and growing. We had many, many amazing entries; you can see them here.
It was extremely difficult for those of us who judged the deviations to find a winner. How do you rate one person's pain and triumph against another? There really is no "right" or "wrong" answer. In the end, we went with the images and stories that were the most moving, powerful, and/or beautifully crafted. This could have gone about 20 ways, as each judge had her own ideas of what should win. In the end,
Winners: Bros. Grimm meet Tim Burton contest!About the contest
The Brothers Grimm meet Tim Burton contest was a dark art competition in which contestants were challenged to twist a Grimm fairytale into a Burtonesque nightmare. IMPORTANT: We had requested that contestants submit their entries as Fan Art, but we found out we can't require that because it's not really Fan Art. So, we accepted entries from any category in the end. The contest was sponsored by Aeirmid and Ombre-De-Nuit.
About the entries
We had 7 awesome entries. You can view them here. The entries were so awesome, in fact, that I decided to let there be 3 winners.
So, here is how the winners were done:
Winner 1: Best overall (artistic and has a great story) - First place
Winner 2: Most artistic - Second place tie
Winner 3: Most creative story - Second place tie

So, you want to make an awesome tutorial for your friends, and anybody else who might be interested in your style/techniques/skills/programming/designing ...
There are some essentials you are going to want to keep in mind when you make your tutorial.
Its not just a bunch of text and some pictures (OK it is, but theres more you could do! )
Its not just a few quick tips or pointers for a friend who asked you for some more details (OK it is, but its more than that! )
Its not just some work in progress screenshots/photos of your next big project (OK it is, but its SO MUCH more than that!!)
Don't forget, great design IS ART!

How to render MMD videos like a pro!
The DeviantArt MMD community is notorious for its drama and mini-conflicts. It has also been the one in which I've encountered some of the rudest people on the Internet. However, I have also been rather fortunate in being able to become acquainted with some of the nicest, talented and knowledgeable people I've ever encountered anywhere. Many of these have graced my gallery with their visits, comments, encouragement and attentions. And a few, perhaps some of the most talented, have graciously given me access to hard to get models, exclusive previews of their MMD work and even insights into their methods of doing things.
Occasionally, I am gifted with real gems and this was the case when garmus1 dropped a note in my inbox the other night. Apart from the depth of knowledge that he gives into his methods, he's also given me permission to share that knowledge with the rest of the community.
Now, I know that some of you will have, after reading only
Golden Age of IllustrationArt History Week
The 19th century marks a huge technology development, with printing techniques improving enough to make newspapers and books a truly mass-popular medium. Along with that, there appeared new opportunities for the illustrators. In the second half of the 19th century, the popularity of illustrated books and magazines reached the highest level recorded by that time and it eventually became the foundation to border the official beginning of the Golden Age of Illustration's timespan: 1880's. Formally it lasted until 1910's-1920's, with variations between Europe and North America.
The core illustrators lived a long time after this period and continued creating pictures in their style - which is defined as typical for the Golden Age. However, new styles and the slow decrease of popularity of book and newspaper illustrations (supported by the rising popularity of photography) after the World War determined the formal end of this age. The European illustrators were influenced mo

FAQ: Where do I submit book covers?Hiya!
I've seen a few people lately asking where they should submit book covers when they are uploading them to dA. First, they should NOT be submitted to Digital Art > Photomanipulation unless they are simply the image (e.g. they do not have an author, title, etc.).
So, where do they go if they are actually book layouts (with author and title)?
You can submit them here: Designs & Interfaces > Editorial Design.
I hope that helps.
