The Rising Stars in Photomanipulation interview series focuses on upcoming rock stars from the photomanipulation community whose names you really ought to know! This week I am so excited to introduce you to someone who not only demonstrates tremendous skill in our medium, but also gives generously to the community via the creation of incredibly clean, well-composed tutorials.

Hi gang,
Wanted to address a couple of concerns that have come my way recently and maybe provide some answers so that we all can work together to make a positive change in this community.
There haven't been a lot of photomanip DDs posted lately. That's not because I don't want to post them or am punishing people-- trust me, I wish I could post a good, strong DD every day. I do not do so because most of the suggestions I get do not meet my specifications.
What are my DD specifications?
Before you suggest, you should read my DD guidelines.In case you need a reminder, here is a short, short version:
A deviant can only have 1 DD every 6 months. There are absolutely no exceptions to this rule.All stock must be legitimate. You cannot just find a random picture via Googl

Traditional Tuesdays #52OMG OMFG OMFG! This is week fifty-two of this little article, and I can honestly say that I didn't think it would last this long. The night I started this feature, I was bored and just browsing around the Traditional Gallery. I was finding all kinds great artwork, that for one reason or another I couldn't/wouldn't give a DD. It could be because they had a DD recently, but mainly it was for a link to go back and see what they created next, and if they took it to the next level. Now it's more for artwork that I no longer have time to DD, I can't DD everything! I still find the article fun to do, and I'll keep doing it until it no longer is. Kick-Off Event Flash Photomanip ChallengeThe stock
During today's chat party kick-off for Photomanipulation Month, we had a challenge in which people were able to find stock related to Halloween with the intention of manipulating it later. We had three required stock pieces, chosen by our group:

This challenge is for people who attended the kick-off party only. Even if you did not participate in the stock challenge itself, you can participate in this challenge as long as you were in the chat at some point.

You must use the above stock images to create a Halloween-themed deviation. It must be a photomanipulation. You ARE allowed to use other stock, but it must be legitimate (no premade backgrounds without stock resources).

Monthly Challenges and other UpdatesHey, everyone!
First, I want to apologize for not being around so much over the past month or so. I had my own stuff going on, plus I was in the middle of exams and had simply committed to too much stuff. I have cut a lot of stuff out and made this group one of my priorities.

So, let's get moving!
I had proposed a contest idea a while back, where people would tell their stories of illness and recovery through art. People seemed to like this idea a LOT, but they felt it shouldn't be a contest per se but rather a challenge. (I think this means that people should tell their story because they want to tell their story, and not because they are getting some prize from it.)
So, I was thinking maybe we can encourage people to participate in monthly challenges again, with the features at the end of the month. I will up the ante and say that I'll give a small prize (like a 3-month subscription or maybe even 1,000 points) to the most creative and meaningful entry, as decided by you all.

Creative Challenge #1What is this?
Helloooo photomanipulators!
After a bit of ado, we are happy to introduce some new challenges that we hope will inspire some more creativity in our community as well as encourage ALL of us (ourselves included) to learn some new skills and expand our repertoire!

For these challenges, we will require the use of one piece of stock that, while lovely and very useful, might typically be considered "overused," and one new skill or technique.
We know there are a lot of challenges out there already, but here are the goals for ours:

To address concerns of "copying" and "lack of creativity" by challenging people to think more creatively about their art,

To help members of our community learn more and expand their skills by challenging them to learn new techniques, and

To maintain the focus of our community on art, growth, and support.

Welcome to your bigger, better photomanipulation newsletter. We are pleased to bring you up-to-date information about things that are going on in the community. It's been a busy few weeks, and we have a lot to share with you!
Direct link requirements on DDs
I spoke with $fourteenthstar and $Moonbeam13, and we decided that you should no longer have to put direct links to stock pictures in order to get a DD. So, you no longer need to direct link your stock pictures for DD purposes. (You DO still need to credit stock, though!) However, many groups still require those direct links for submissions, and that decision is entirely up to the group administrators. We hope this change will help make suggesting and posting DDs easier.

This tiny insignificant thing mildly displeases meI love browsing the Suggestions forum but am seriously blown away by how many times people post threads suggesting/requesting/demanding that dA alter the way the site works in order that they never have to see anything that isn't to their specific personal taste.
I'm not talking about the Mature Content filter or submissions with violate dA's policies here. I mean people expecting the entire site to change so that they don't ever encounter a thumbnail-sized image of a cat or My Little Pony or [insert other random object or concept here] while looking at the front page in Newest or Popular modes.
I find myself typing pretty much the same thing to these people on a regular basis, so thought it would be easier to simply make a journal about it that I can link to. So here it is.

Hi all,

For those of you who do not know, PHOTOMANIPULATION MONTH starts in one week (on October 1st)! Please be sure you are watching #projecteducate and/or my journal to learn about some super exciting and wonderfully wicked happenings in the photomanipulation community.

Also, please either leave a comment on this blog or send me a note with your questions about anything at all related to photomanipulation and the photomanipulation community.

For example, what does it take to get a DD? What am I looking for when I DD stuff? What is composition and why does it matter? Why do I need to be careful about using premade backgrounds? Where can I find a great tutorial on fire? Why is using the "Match Color" filter often a bad idea?

Also, I will be contacting some of you to get your 'stories' -- that is, your experiences with photomanipulation. Still others will be (or have been) contacted for interviews. These are great opportunities to get YOUR art exposed.

What else do you all want to know about?

How come you didn't give any info about what is happening when one wins a competion like this [link] ? It would be nice if there are any kind info in announcement journa about such things! ! I didn't know that it takes a few months before one recieve the prizes for example and we had to ask each other in the inbox .. same with the promised features ! When one wins for the first time ever it's not easy to know such things! It would be kind to the contestants to let them know. It's embarrassing to have to ask for the prize!

Oh, i'm not yelling! I never do! This was only a simple suggestion for you to do in competions in the future so contestants knows about how things works! I mean to inform them it takes months to recieve the prize! Sorry if this isn't the place but I read we could ask questions!
