How to report stolen work on dA

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 19, 2013, 7:34 AM
Hi all,

I've seen enough stolen work journals lately that I wanted to make sure you know exactly how to report it. A couple of things to keep in mind:

:bulletpink: I, as a CV, cannot do anything about it. Bitching at me about it for "doing nothing" will only get you blocked and/or reported for spam.

:bulletpink: It does NOT help to post a journal asking all 500 of your closest friends to report the stolen work. dA will pay attention to YOUR request as the artist. Third party reports get lower priority than first party (artist) reports.

:bulletpink: Make sure you are filing a DMCA report and doing so CORRECTLY. If you do it correctly, dA staff WILL look into it.

Here's how to do it correctly:

Step 1: On the right side of the deviation, click "Report Image," about halfway down.

Step 2: On the left, select "My Intellectual Property."

Step 3: On the right side of that form (where I've circled it, below), click "File a DMCA Notice."

Step 4: Fill out the form that comes up. Notice that you have to click through a couple of pages and then submit it.

That's it. No need for fuss or drama.

I hope that helps.

Jade

How do you know that your art has been stolen? Will some one tell you or DA itself? :(

usually you find it or someone else sees it and tells you about it. You can also check by reverse-searching your image. Copy the URL of your image on dA into the search box at images.google.com or tineye.com.

Do wish deviants would understand that to spam the help desk simply makes in harder for $taff to do their work! Thank you for putting this journal out

Can someone tell me how to report a comment very offensive and someone that is trying to hack everyone's account?

Report the first (offensive) one as spam and then report it to the help desk as harassment. Report the second (hacker) to the Help Desk also. BOTH should go under Abuse reports. Also see: FAQ #660: My deviantART account has been hacked. What can I do?

Um, one problem with this: If you are a stock provider, whose stock has been used without credit and without notification - in other words: stolen - YOU ARE NOT PROTECTED BY THE DMCA, according to dA $taff.

I never understood the mentality of "if we report the same thing 100 times it will be taken down faster". I'd imagine it just bogs up the system.

No drama but will this report make it faster for the stolen work to be noticed and taken down? Just because it would be written by the owner does it really make it go faster? And does that mean that for me it would be practically useless to report a work if I'm not the original artist?
Its not that I like the drama but from what I have seen an angry mob can take down a thief much faster than any report. I have reported many, many works and for many of them took a long time to be noticed.

This is great! We've had too much drama lately with people stealing artwork when there doesn't need to be.

OMG so damn glad this journal came along, people should finally realize how this works. I'm often getting notes or comments asking to "help report" some deviation stolen, people really enjoy making fuss around it instead of properly reporting.

I can't tell you how many of these lynch mob type journals I've tried to educate the writers and their watchers about only the artist being listened to in regards to reporting stolen Intellectual Property... All fallen on deaf ears, of course.

Calling you out on not doing anything about the massive thefts is just as ignorant as creating a lynch mob in journals. Doesn't do a bit of good and makes them look just as ignorant as the thieves.
