PE Photomanip: That's a Wrap!Thank You!
Photomanipulation Week here at #projecteducate has been phenomenal, and that is entirely thanks to you, our viewers, and to the community members who made it happen. Our community wrote most of the articles; I just posted them. Our community interviewed many, many people and answered what had to have seemed like endless questions about how they do their stuff. And do you know, of the many people I asked, only one or two were unable? People contributed in spite of busy schedules, poor health conditions, other projects, and other competing demands because they knew this was important. I cannot thank you enough.
I wanted to show you the sheer number of people (well over 40) who participated in this event. Every one of these people made a significant contribution. Please, everyone show some love to the deviants who made this week possible (and then keep reading; more good stuff coming below this list):

A discussion of Daily Deviations (DDs) is always a difficult one to navigate. Some people hold them in very high esteem, while others do not; some people see them as an opportunity to expose new artists, while others want to see the latest work from the masters of manipulation. And most of us want to know where ours is or when it is coming! :XD:
Some of the Community Volunteers, led by ^Astralseed, have come together to share some of the "secrets" or "logic" behind what it takes to get a DD and what DDs really are all about. We are going to put together a Project Educate: Daily Deviations week mid-August, and you are invited!

Feedback Frenzy
Feedback Frenzy was an activity in which all you devious people out there (164 of you, to be exact!) critiqued one another's deviations and received critique in return. It lasted an entire week. We do not know how many critiques in total were completed yet, but we do know that the lists are so long that they won't fit through the dA message system! :XD:
So, if you are trying to note us with your team's final list of critiques and the note won't go through, break it into multiple notes. Just label them something like Team No. 41 Part I & II so that we know they go together.

All of us have heard about feedback events during our time on deviantArt. Many of us have participated in them, while others have declined to do so for various reasons. Some of these reasons include fear of receiving critique on one's own work, fear of being attacked for critiquing someone's work, fear of not knowing what to say, and feeling inadequate to critique a deviation from someone who is perhaps more skilled than we are--especially if the deviation is created using a medium to which we are unaccustomed.
We especially want to focus on this last reason.
Here is a conversation that we had recently in a dA chat room (names have been changed):
Us: We are planning a cross-medium, dA-wide critique event for Project Educate!! Will you participate?
DeviantX: Hmm. I don't know.

So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all. :XD: Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.
PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the LegendDaily Deviations, or DDs . . . for some deviants, receiving one is the epitome of awesomesauce in the deviantART world. For others, they are a nice way to show off the work of lesser-known artists. Still others treat them as a special way to bring attention to great art that exemplifies works being done by a particular gallery or community.
Perhaps because there are so many different ways of conceptualizing DDs, there are also many myths and misconceptions. I would like to address some of those myths by responding to the ones most frequently heard. Please note that these opinions are mine and reflect my experiences with the photomanipulation community, but perhaps they will be informative nevertheless.
Myth 1: DDs should always be perfect.
To many of us, the ideal Daily Deviation goes to an artist with amazing talent whose work draws you in and makes you think, "Wow, everyone needs to see this!" A DD should move you, inspire you, and provoke you to think, b

You know, as photomanipulators, we rely pretty heavily on the stock and resources community, and the opposite is true as well. It is because of this symbiotic relationship that both communities flourish, growing and evolving off of each other. Because of stock artists here on dA and elsewhere, we are able to create our manipulations. Stock inspires us; it drives us to create by capturing in visual image format that which we envision in our minds. So, for our Project Educate week, I sat down to have a conversation with ^Elandria, one of our Community Volunteers (CVs) for stock and resources and a fantastic digital artist, who I am fortunate enough to call a friend as well as a colleague.

Welcome to Feedback Week here at Project Educate!



Welcome to Feedback Week! This week is being brought to you by a team of very devious deviants over at #FeedbackFrenzy.

In January of this year, the marvelous ^Beccalicious led a Critique Week in which we learned about many of the critique groups here on deviantART and also the essentials of giving and receiving critique for various media. In case you missed it, here are a few of the fantastic articles that were shared that week:



So, for our week, we wanted to take Critique Week a step further and put the skills we learned to use! We have developed some activities that we hope you will find enjoyable as well as useful for your own work.

Without further ado, we would like to introduce you to . . .



Feedback Frenzy!



Feedback Frenzy (housed at #FeedbackFrenzy) is a week-long challenge designed to help deviants like you and me get better feedback on our artwork! For the past two weeks, deviants have been registering as entrants for this exciting competition, and we can't wait to watch them do their thing! :la:

Goals:



"Feedback Frenzy" is a week-long game designed to encourage deviants to (1) step outside their comfort zone and practice giving feedback to others, even if not in their own media; (2) meet new deviants from across dA, and (3) receive as much high-quality, useful feedback on their work as possible.

Time frame:


July 2nd to July 8th (one full week) :excited:

How does it work?



:bulletpink: Entrants have signed up to critique and include art they want critiqued. (Sign-up is now closed.) We have more than 140 members participating! :w00t!:
:bulletpink: Contestants have been split in teams of four based on medium (such that there is a variety of media represented in each group). You will be responsible for communicating with your group members about who will critique which deviations.
:bulletpink: You'll have one week to write your best comments or critiques for as many of the pieces as you can. You don't need to be a premium member to participate!
:bulletpink: In the interim, people will be giving YOU feedback on your work!!!
:bulletpink: #FeedbackFrenzy staff will rate the critiques for quality according to a grading rubric (see below).
:pointr: Since quality matters, one fantastic critique is worth more than 10 poor critiques!
:pointr: The team with the highest total number of points wins!  

So give us the best you've got - make your comments useful, accurate, applicable, informative, and friendly (but honest). Pull together resources and provide direction for the artist. Remember, you'll be receiving comments through this contest as well as giving them, so write the kind of critique that you'd really love to get in return!



The Rules!



The rules for Feedback Frenzy are fairly straightforward:

:bulletred: You can only comment / critique on deviations from the FF July2-8 2012 favorites folder at #FeedbackFrenzy. We encourage you to start by critiquing your group members! :)
:bulletred: Comments are fine; you do not have to be a premium member to participate.
:bulletred: Get together with your group right away to decide who will critique which deviations. Work as a team, and you'll make more progress more quickly.
Note: More than one person per team can critique a given deviation. However, we recommend that you start with one critique of each deviation per TEAM and then add more if time allows. The same PERSON cannot critique the same deviation twice.
:bulletred: We suggest that you not look at the other critiques before writing your own. Blatant copying will get you disqualified.
:bulletred: At the end of the competition, each team should send ONE note to the group (#FeedbackFrenzy) with links to ALL critiques from all 4 members (separated by member). We must receive this note by July 9th at 11:59 PM Pacific US time.
:bulletred: No critiques will be accepted that were written prior to 6 AM Pacific US time on July 2nd or after 11:59 PM Pacific US time on July 8th.



Scoring Guidelines



When we score your critiques, you can earn up to 60 points. Your critique will be rated 0 to 5 on 10 items:

  • :bulletgreen: Greeting (We want the artist to know that your comments are for our competition, so don't forget to mention #FeedbackFrenzy!)
  • :bulletgreen: Description of what the deviant did correctly in the deviation
  • :bulletgreen: Description of what needs improvement in the deviation
  • :bulletgreen: Description of HOW to make the needed improvements (to the best of your ability)
  • :bulletgreen: Statement of the overall impact / your overall impression
  • :bulletgreen: Encouragement for the deviant
  • :bulletgreen: Overall tone of critique
  • :bulletgreen: Usefulness of critique to the deviant (can he/she apply what you have told him?)
  • :bulletgreen: Relevance of critique to the deviation (Were you on-point?)
  • :bulletgreen: "Wow" factor (Does it have that extra flair, that extra special "something" that you can't quite define? Does it stand out from the others in the category?)
