PE Photomanip: That's a Wrap!Thank You!
Photomanipulation Week here at projecteducate has been phenomenal, and that is entirely thanks to you, our viewers, and to the community members who made it happen. Our community wrote most of the articles; I just posted them. Our community interviewed many, many people and answered what had to have seemed like endless questions about how they do their stuff. And do you know, of the many people I asked, only one or two were unable? People contributed in spite of busy schedules, poor health conditions, other projects, and other competing demands because they knew this was important. I cannot thank you enough.
I wanted to show you the sheer number of people (well over 40) who participated in this event. Every one of these people made a significant contribution. Please, everyone show some love to the deviants who made this week possible (and then keep reading; more good stuff coming below this list):
Photomanipulation: Exploring textureTexture: We love it!
If there's one thing a lot of photomanipulators love, it's texture, glorious texture! Texture can change your entire image and make it or break it. In our community, it is frequently used for creating a "dark" effect, but it can be used to create or enhance absolutely any theme you can dream up. I wanted to share some brilliant examples of art that use textures well. I also want to provide some tips of things I've learned and direct you to some tutorials.
Let's get started!
Brilliant and inspiring
Tips for success
Use textures to highlight positive assets of the manipulation; don't use them to try to cover flaws of poor blending or cropping.
Photomanip Phenoms Vol. 01Outstanding photomanips. Outstanding artists.
Exposed, but not overexposed.
I hope I am introducing some of you to new artists to watch and love.
And if you've loved them before, here's your chance to love them again!
These artists were carefully chosen because their work displays not only technical prowess and knowledge of the medium, but also a great deal of creativity. They are always imitated but never duplicated. They make me want to reach inside myself and be a better artist-- learn more, be more patient, try and try again. I hope you will also get inspiration from these pieces.
Photomanip News and Feature 03 AugustHi everyone,
The status quo in the photomanipulation community is GO! GO! GO! We have been extremely busy with creating, supporting one another, and dreaming up contests and other fun challenges. I have been delayed in reporting our news for personal reasons, so this news article is jam-packed with goodness that you, the photomanipulation community, need to know!
Let's get started!
Calling on Community Leaders
We have a wonderful photomanipulation community here, and I'm really honored to serve you all as your Community Volunteer (CV). I have been trying to post weekly news, conduct interviews and do features, post DDs, organize Project Educate and other community challenges, host critique events, and hold contests that I hope are challenging and interesting. I absolutely love doing all of this, but I am also trying to get a Ph.D. and am going to run into trouble juggling it all in the Fall.
So, I will be asking a few of you who I know well and trust to hel
PE Photomanip: Ask Me Anything!PE Photomanipulation: Ask Me Anything!
One of the activities for Project Educate: Photomanipulation was for the community to ask questions from more experienced community "experts." For "Ask Me Anything," community members came up with ten excellent questions for ten Experts to answer. Having had time to peruse and consider the questions asked, the Experts kindly returned the answers to be included in this news article. Many thanks to the deviants asking, as well as a huge thank you to the Experts for taking the time to come up with such succinct, detailed, and helpful answers.
iAmoret asked, "How do you get that dark, dreary, foggy effect that makes it look like it's all from the same image, like Ahmed-R-Shalaby did in 'Dead Marshes'?

10 Things a Photomanip Newbie Should KnowHi all,
I wanted to talk for a moment to our newbie photomanipulators or even older photomanipulators who are out of the fray. How are you? Welcome to the inner circle.
Here are some things that you (and all photomanipulators) need to know about dA and the photomanipulation community.
1. Stay in touch with the Photomanipulation CV (currently me, Aeirmid).
Watch me. No, that's not an ill-formed plea for pageviews, favorites, or watchers. Actually, I rarely even post art anymore. I am the Community Volunteer (CV) for photomanipulation, which means I regularly run contests, feature art, share news, post Daily Deviations (DDs), and do other things to support the community. It is in your best interest to watch my journal because I post every photomanipulation-related update there. This information is important to you so you can learn about upcoming events, changes in rules, new groups, and other news.
2. Watch :devcommunity
PE Photomanip: More on dark manipulationHi, everyone!
GUESS WHAT!!! You get a bonus blog today because . . . intano is in the house!!
Tugba took some time out of her very busy schedule to chat with me about dark photomanipulation and photomanipulation in general. These questions are similar to those that the lovely MarcelaBolivar answered in our dark photomanipulation interview from earlier in the series (click here). It is always useful to have more perspectives and ideas regarding dark art and its operational definition, and we are really grateful to both of these brilliant artists for sharing their wisdom with us.

So, the “dark” photomanipulation category is confusing many people because it can feature anything from beautiful, sorrowful women in l
PE Photomanip: Dark photomanipulationWhat is Dark Photomanipulation?
Is dark manipulation romantic? Frightening? Cold? Is it full of untold possibilities or a scream waiting to erupt from your throat?
Dark photomanipulation has something for every shade of your dark mood and demeanor. If you visit our dark photomanipulation gallery, you will find everything from grimly beautiful women surrounded by crows to figures engrossed in decay and beautiful stagnation. Some pieces are soothing in their depths; some are startling in their grotesqueness.
So, once again, what is a dark photomanipulation?
When we submit our deviations to the Digital Art > Photomanipulation > Dark gallery, we see the following gallery description:
Photomanipulations which are dark in theme or mood, and have a mystical, obscure, sombre, grim, or sinister expression.
This is a good conceptual definition, but we also want to obtain a more operational definition fro
Photomanipulation-Related Submission FAQsHello everyone,
Sometimes with the flood of information these days, it becomes really easy to lose track of the basics of what you can and cannot do and what is and is not required for submission. I thought I would put together some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for the Photomanipulation Community. Many of these answers are also relevant to the rest of dA.
I hope this is useful as we move forward with PE: Photomanip Month!
Does my artwork need a mature tag?
deviantART defines mature content as "Mature content is considered to be anything which contains nudity, excessive violence, blood, gore, or any other potentially upsetting or offensive material" and suggests that images that are controversial, such as religion and politics, may also be considered "mature." But, the definition of "mature" is more broad than that. See :faq220:
So what does this mean for YOUR specific artwork? The FAQs also explain that: :faq554:

Project Educate: The Art of PhotomanipulationHello, deviantART! How are you?
I’m back to tell you a little bit about my very favorite form of art here on dA: photomanipulation, often referenced simply as, manipulation or manips. Hope you enjoy!
What is photomanipulation?
The general consensus in our community seems to be that photomanipulation involves taking elements from at least two photographs (and/or, by some definitions, other sources like 3D work or brushes) and fitting them together to create something that is seamless and distinct from the original sources. Some people argue that a photomanipulation can be made with one photograph as long as the final piece of art is drastically different from the picture from which it originated. If it is not dramatically different—i.e., if the final product is similar to the original photograph but perhaps a bit cleaned up or minor edits are added without including any new elements—we might call it a retouch<

Bring Your Type to Life - A Typography ContestIt is time for another Typography contest! The theme of this contest will be…
Bring your Type to Life
This may sound abstract at first, but to keep the theme as open as possible, I choose a rather abstract title. There are many directions in which you can go. You could choose an anthropomorphic direction, where you breathe life into letters and give them human or other animate characteristics. Another route would be to create the letters out of living objects, such as plants or animals.
Which direction you choose, maybe even a third or fourth one, does not matter. What matters is that your letters are brought to life!
What kind of letters you bring to life, words, glyphs or sentences, is 100% up to you. This contest has a more visual approach, so you will not be judged on the creativity of the meaning you choose to give to the letters. However, don't rush it! Even one letter can appear completely different than another. Be wise with the letters, word

My friends used to call William "Ironman" because the first time we kissed he got a nosebleed and the taste of his blood haunted me for a long time after it. We'd only been twelve years old and apparently the anxiety spiked his blood pressure to the point of combustion... I remember that when we were forced to take sex ed a few years later we were divided into separate classes for boys and girls, in case a diagram of an ovary was too risqué and we became animalistic and started clawing at each other in our seats, but nonetheless when our teacher Ms Jacobs had explained to us what an erection was in my mind all I could picture was the blood rushing to his nose and then the slash of cranberry across my blouse.
With the idea planted in his mind it didn't take long for William's hands to start wandering, but the image persisted. Every time I thought about just letting it happen I wondered what would happen if he got too excite
